Do you know someone who would excel in college but is holding back because they feel intimidated by the idea? It's disheartening to see such potential go untapped due to fear or uncertainty.

In my travels around the district, I have the chance to talk with many people thinking about college. This includes parents of college-年龄d students, professionals 和 educators working with high school students, adults thinking about returning to school, 和 high school students themselves, many are unsure about their college choices. 当然, at College of the Redwoods, we want to encour年龄 everyone to attend CR or Cal Poly Humboldt. From a business perspective, we can look at higher education as an investment.

I believe that no matter how you assess the positives 和 negatives of higher education, the positives always outweigh the negatives. 我们都知道, contrary to what critics would have us believe, data still shows that a college education leads to upward mobility, 加强公民参与, 工资增长, especially for low-income 和 第一代 college students. 不幸的是, I have learned through research 和 anecdotally while talking with my high school colleagues, these are the same students who are also especially vulnerable to feelings of intimidation or inadequacy.

Studies show that many 第一代 students face imposter syndrome, feeling that they are "not college material" 和 doubt their ability to succeed in higher education (The Century Foundation, Lakewood University). The absence of mentors 和 professional networks further exacerbates this challenge, making it difficult for them to navigate academic 和 career development (ED的博客). Similarly, low-income students, including many Native American students, face significant barriers. Financial strain is a common issue, with research indicating that 72% of Native students run out of money at least once in six months, 和 over 50% struggle with food insecurity  (7400万)​​ (Georgetown University, THE FEED)​.

Beyond these specific groups, many students encounter various psychological barriers, including a fear of failure, especially those who have faced academic challenges in the past. These students may struggle with self-esteem, confidence 和/or mental health issues such as stress 和 anxiety. 另外, feelings of being unprepared for college-level work can make their transition to higher education more daunting. 然而, by addressing these challenges through comprehensive support systems, 我们可以帮助所有的学生, regardless of their background, realize their potential 和 thrive in higher education. 通过给予鼓励, 资源, 和指导, we empower them to overcome obstacles 和 achieve their educational goals.
